In 1861, Mr. Torrance enlisted with Company A of the 19th Pennsylvania volunteer infantry for service in the Civil war. In the days that followed, he saw service in all battles in the eastern section of the country. He was wounded at Bull Run, fought at Gettysburg, in the Mine Run campaigns, at Drainsville, Crossroads and Malvern Hill. He was a second lieutenant at the end of the war.
