ENS, US NAVY AIR FTR SQ 12 (VF-12) WORLD WAR II
William served as an Ensign & Pilot, Fighter Squadron 12 (VF-12) U.S. Navy during World War II.
VF-12 was in the process of organizing from July 20, 1944 through January 16, 1945 to be stationed on the U.S.S. Randolph (CV-15) which was scheduled to go into full combat operations on January 20, 1945 in the Pacific.
During this organization, while ferrying a Grumman F6F Hellcat from Astoria, Oregon to Ream Field, San Ysidro, California, Ensign William Murray died in the "Line Of Duty" when his plane crashed off the coast of California during the war.
William was the first member of VF-12 to lose his life during the war.
